19 Skoltechians featured on Stanford University’s ranking of world’s top 2% scientists
October 04, 2024

Nineteen researchers from Skoltech have made it into the annual ranking of the world’s top researchers compiled by Stanford University’s John Ioannidis and co-authors. Created in partnership with Elsevier and drawing on the academic publisher’s Scopus citation database, the league table captures the impact of frequently cited researchers in their respective fields during the year 2023 and throughout their careers. The latest edition came out in September.

The primary indicators used in the database emphasize research impact (citations), as opposed to productivity (the raw number of publications), incorporate information on co-authorship and author positions (single, first, last author), and exclude self-citations. Separate rankings are published for single-year and career-long impact.

The 2024 edition of the rankings lists more than 200,000 researchers from all over the world, including the following Skoltech researchers, based on their 2023 results:

  • Distinguished Professor Artem Abakumov at No. 292 out of 75,463 in inorganic and nuclear chemistry,

  • Professor Evgeniy Antipov at No. 1,411 out of 75,463 in inorganic and nuclear chemistry,

  • Professor Evgeny Burnaev at No. 4,008 out of 399,064 in AI and image processing,

  • Professor Dmitriy Chudakov at No. 1,661 out of 157,372 in immunology,

  • Professor Vasily Fedotov at No. 270 out of 78,127 in optics,

  • late Professor Igor Krichever at No. 928 out of 68,528 in general mathematics,

  • Professor Ivan Kulakov at No. 809 out of 98,126 in geochemistry and geophysics,

  • Professor Albert Nasibulin at No. 4,839 out of 135,958 in nanoscience and nanotechnology,

  • Professor Evgeny Nikolaev at No. 2,866 out of 122,576 in analytical chemistry,

  • and Assistant Professor Sergey Zagoruyko at No. 1,941 out of 399,064 in AI and image processing.

The openly available database underlying the rankings has been developed since 2015 and was originally published in 2019 as a response to the “use and misuse of citation metrics,” in an attempt to provide a more rigorous, accurate, and transparent measure of scientific impact and excellence.

The present edition is the seventh installment of the rankings, officially known as the Updated Science-Wide Author Databases of Standardized Citation Indicators. It relies on a snapshot of Scopus data as of August 1, 2024.
