January 30, 2025

Sergey Rykovanov, Associate Professor and Head of the Supercomputing in AI Laboratory at the Skoltech AI Center, took part in the "Photojournalism in Modern Realities" round table held at the International Multimedia Press Center of the "Rossiya Segodnya" media group. The discussion, organized under the Andrei Stenin International Photojournalism Contest, brought together experts from around the world to address the key challenges facing the industry, including the impact of generative AI on visual media.

A key focus of the discussion was the issue of credibility in information sources and the protection of individuals captured in journalistic photographs. As technology rapidly evolves, distinguishing reality from digital manipulation is becoming increasingly difficult.

Sergey Rykovanov shared his perspective on the evolution of photojournalism in the age of AI:

"We are on the threshold of a new era in photojournalism, where AI-driven solutions can not only facilitate the work of reporters but also pose new challenges to the credibility of visual information. The task of the community is to strike a balance between technology and ethical standards to preserve the value of authentic reporting."

As the organizers emphasized, modern photojournalism is no longer just the click of a camera shutter—it is a constant engagement with cutting-edge technologies. The key question remains: can humanity leverage these tools for good without losing the authenticity and depth of the stories told through photography?
