The existing biocollection is designed for research tasks related to the study of molecular biomarkers and phenotypic manifestations of conditionally healthy populations during critical periods of human life (ontogenesis). It was founded in 2002 by the Russian Children's Study (Russian Children's Study, PI - Oleg Sergeev and Russ Hauser), a unique cohort prospective study of the growth, physical and sexual development, and reproductive health of the male population of a small town in the Samara region, observed from the age of 8 to 22.
In terms of the combination of design, methods, rigor of the approaches used, the scientists involved in various specialties, the quantity and quality of accumulated information, bio-samples and publications in highly rated journals, as well as its potential, this multidisciplinary study can be considered as a “state of the art” in human sciences such as molecular epidemiology, personalized medicine, genetics. and epigenetics, endocrinology, reproductology, etc. There are no analogues of such a study in the world.
Another important function of this unique biocollection is biomonitoring, which studies changes in the content of various markers in biological fluids. As a subject of biomonitoring, both exogenous chemicals are used to assess temporary trends in human exposure, and endogenous biomarkers reflecting dynamic changes in the body in various periods of ontogenesis. The collection was supplemented with biological samples from other prospective multicenter cohort studies (RFBR grant 20-015-00458, Russian Foundation for Basic Research grants 14-45-00065; 18-15-00202; 18-15-00202-P), in particular, follicular fluid samples from women seeking IVF clinics in 20 regions of Russia to search for medicinal targets for human infertility treatment, as well as breast milk samples to study the accumulation trend in milk, chemical pollutants, etc.
The biobank includes more than 66,000 aliquots of human biosciences stacked in 1600+ boxes\tripods:
