Nikolaev E.N. – Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Department of Nanotechnology and Information Technology, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Scientific Director of the Institute for Energy Problems of Chemical Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences named after V.L. Talroze, Professor of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.
Nikolaev E.N. is a specialist in the field of bioinformation computing systems, machine learning and physical foundations of nanotechnology, information and instrumental methods of mass spectrometry, biomedical applications of mass spectrometry, mass spectrometry of nano-objects of biological origin. The main areas of his scientific interests are the development of new computing systems and instrumental methods of mass spectrometry and their application in medicine and the development of instrumental element base.
Nikolaev E.N. is the author of more than 530 publications in peer-reviewed journals and 65 author's certificates and patents. More than 300 of his publications in highly rated scientific journals relate to the period of his activity after his election as a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2016 (Hirsch Index 50, number of citations 9100 according to Google Scholar).
E.N. Nikolaev is the leader of the Russian school of mass spectrometry, created by the Nobel laureate academician N.N. Semenov. He developed instrumental and computing mass spectrometric complexes for the analysis of nanosized molecular objects with record values of mass measurement accuracy and resolution in the analysis of biomolecules (Solarix and simaX mass spectrometers); He was the first in Russia to develop and create a new type of ultra-high resolution mass spectrometric system ready for industrial production (letter O).
He is a world-renowned specialist in the field of mass spectrometry. In his honor, a special issue of the International Journal of Mass Spectrometry was published in 2012, and a special issue of the Mass spectrometry review was published in 2022.
He developed methods and an element base for nanospray mass spectrometric analysis of tissues from biopsies for their identification during surgery; methods and a computational information system for diagnostic screening of the proteome of living organisms, including a method for rapid mass spectrometric identification of the covid-19 virus and a replicable technological platform for its implementation in clinics. He developed new neural network computational methods for processing mass spectral images and predicting the physicochemical characteristics of molecules. The methods he developed are used in leading medical centers (V.I. Kulakov Obstetrics and Gynecology Center, N.N. Burdenko Neurosurgery Center, I.V. Davydovsky City Clinical Hospital, Pulmonology Research Institute of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia).
Nikolaev E.N. Professor at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. He has supervised 29 candidates of science and 3 doctors of science. He is a member of the editorial boards of leading journals in the field of mass spectrometry "Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry", "European Journal of Mass Spectrometry", "Mass Spectrometry Reviews".
