Photonics Research Seminar Series: Prof. Sakellaris Mailis, Laser-synthesis of 2D semiconductors
December 13, 2023 / Wednesday
17:00 19:00

Abstract: Thin film semiconductors, such as 2D transition metal dichalcogenides have attracted much interest recently due to their electronic and photonic properties as well as their compositional tunability, which allows the tailoring of their performance and response within a wide spectral region. In this seminar Prof. Mailis will discuss the use of laser radiation as a tool for the spatially selective synthesis of materials in ambient conditions, and show some recent results on the growth of various 2D semiconductors, which we have obtained in the laboratory of hybrid photonics at Skoltech.

Bio: Dr Sakellaris Mailis graduated from the Physics department at the University of Crete in Greece. He received his PhD in Physics from the University of Crete/Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH-IESL) in 1996. In 1998 he joined the Optoelectronics Research Centre at Southampton in UK as a postdoctoral fellow to investigate laser-induced optical and structural modifications in ferroelectric crystals and other photonic materials. He became a senior Research Follow in 2000 and Principal Research Fellow in 2008. He joined the Hybrid Photonics lab at Skoltech in 2019 where he is conducting research on the development of optical waveguide circuits in photonic materials and the growth of 2D semiconductors.
